Sermon by Pastor Tom Brown · May 11, 2025

Today we look at Matthew 5:17-20. In this passage Jesus anticipated the question of his relationship with the Old Testament.

Jesus did not limit his teaching to the expounding of the Torah, but brought new teaching with authority. It was unlike anything anyone had ever heard, emphasizing the love and grace of God.

In the eyes of the Pharisees he repeatedly violated the law . . .

  • He healed on the Sabbath.
  • He touched people who were ceremonially unclean.
  • He went into the homes of sinners and dined with them.

Many wondered “Has he abandoned the Law and prophets?”

Jesus’ answer was crystal clear. “I have not come to abolish the law and the prophets, but to fulfil them.” Three truths stand out in his response.

1. Jesus is the fulfilment of all Scripture. (17-18)

2. To honor Jesus is to do and teach all Scripture. (19)

3. You will never do or teach enough to be good enough. (20)

The law and the prophets cannot justify a person. But they can show us our desperate need for grace. They can lead us to the cross where our blessed Savior died to justify sinners.

Now that we are justified by faith we have a new relationship with the law and prophets. They are hardwired into our regenerated hearts. Now we have the privilege of doing and teaching them as they are fulfilled in Christ.

As we carry out that privilege, we are counted as great in the eyes of heaven.
