Sermon by Pastor Tom Brown · May 03, 2026 · Colossians Series

Today we look at how the Bible answers three important questions in Colossians 3:12-17:

1. Who are you really? (3:12)

In Christ you are chosen, holy and beloved. This is who you are at the core of your being. When you wake up in the morning, before anything has been done you are beloved. At the end of the day, after all has been said and done, you are beloved. Strip everything else down and at the very center of your being you are beloved.

2. What are you like when you are your true self? (3:12-14)

As God’s chosen, holy and beloved there are characteristics we grow into that reflect our true nature. Compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, forgiving. The one great unifying quality of all of these is love.

3. How do you see the world when you are thinking clearly? (3:15-17)

When the Word of Christ fills our hearts, we see ourselves and the world clearly. This produces a fundamental outlook of deep thankfulness. Giving thanks is like opening a door to the love of God. It is an act of trust that says ‘yes’ to God’s love, no matter the circumstance.

One way we can summarize this passage is to say, “Beloved, love.”

As the church in our world today faces pressures from all directions, it is as important as ever to keep our priorities straight. If there is one thing we must get right, it is this – above all love.
