Today we start a 3 part mini-series on Philemon.
Paul’s letter to the house church leader is a companion to Colossians.
The letter is personal and specific, yet it’s message is a timeless demonstration of the revolutionary power of the gospel.
This week we look at verses 1-7 where Paul frames his ethical guidance to his friend in light of the community of faith.
The letter is addressed to Philemon, but sent in a package addressed to the whole community of faith.
In those verses we see that Jesus calls us to work out our faith by
1. Living together as God’s family (1-2)
2. Being shaped by the grace of the gospel (3-5)
3. Putting our love into action (6-7)
Our faith is deeply personal, but it is not private.
Only as we live our faith out in active sharing with one another do we grow into the image of Christ.
If you’ve ever felt that Sundays can be a little dull, here is a challenge to you – resolve this week that before you leave the service, someone is going to be blessed and refreshed by your faith. You might be surprised by the energy that brings to your faith!
