At times we find ourselves in a crisis and we know that we are at least partially responsible for the trouble we are in.
What do we do in moments like that?
Nehemiah 1:4-11 gives us a great pattern to follow. When Nehemiah learned about the troubled state of Jerusalem, he felt the full weight not only of the crisis there but also of the guilt of his people. Let’s follow his reaction.
1. Sit down.
As soon as I heard these words I sat down and wept and mourned for days… and I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven.
2. Look up.
O Lord God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments…
3. Empty your hands.
Even I and my father’s house have sinned. We have acted very corruptly against you and have not kept the commandments, the statutes, and the rules that you commanded your servant Moses
4. Grab hold of the promises of grace.
Remember the word that you commanded your servant Moses…
5. Make a specific request.
give success to your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.
Friends, God is great and awesome. Nothing is impossible for Him. He can change everything in a moment. And He is a faithful and merciful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love.
He is always eager to hear the prayers of humble, repentant souls who rely on his promises.
Through the finished work of Christ on the cross we have secure access to the precious promises of the steadfast love and grace of our mighty God. What a hope we have in Jesus!
Let’s hold fast to his grace.
