When Paul and Barnabas surveyed the results of their first missionary expedition, they saw one thing that was lacking. The newly established Christian communities needed leaders.
The apostles sought out reliable shepherds to lead, feed and protect the growing congregations – men of integrity who were eager to serve according to the example of Jesus.
The New Testament writers used 3 words to describe those leaders – elders, shepherds (pastors) and overseers. The words were used interchangeably, each highlighting a different aspect of the work.
“Elders are biblically qualified shepherd-leaders appointed to oversee the local church. They are responsible for teaching sound doctrine, protecting the church from error, caring for spiritual needs, and leading by Christlike example.” -Alexander Strauch, Biblical Eldership
In his letters to Timothy and Titus, Paul left the church a guide to follow in the evaluation of potential elders. His guidelines included standards for moral integrity, family life, spiritual maturity, doctrinal soundness and public witness.
Ultimately, Paul recognized that it was the work of God to prepare elders for his churches.
Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood. -Acts 20:28
