Sermon by Pastor Tom Brown · Jan 01, 2023

I want to talk to you this morning about New Year’s Resolutions.

Some of you are excited about that. You have your word for the year, a list of goals and lots of enthusiasm for a new start. Some of you are groaning on the inside – your only resolution was to not talk about resolutions this month.

I can relate to both camps.

Here’s what you need to know – we all need resolutions in our lives.

A resolution is a firm decision to do or not do something. Resolution is an act of the will.

Without resolution, we are prone to mistake our feelings for our wants.

I want to live a life of discipline and strength. I want to know God. I want to be healthy and fit.

But my feelings will often diverge from these wants. I want to be healthy, but I feel like eating another box of chocolate snack cakes and sleeping another hour in the morning. I want to be godly, but I don’t feel like reading my Bible.

You see the problem?

In order to rise above our shifting and unreliable feelings, we need resolutions. Whether they start on January 1st or July 12th, whether they last a year or a lifetime – resolutions remind us of our true desires.

I want to invite you to join me in one great resolution for 2023. Here’s the resolution: seek God.

Seeking God is the one good in life that guarantees all other goods.

The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing.

Psalm 34:10

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Matthew 6:33

The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him;

Lamentations 3:25

Seeking God leads to a tangible, satisfying knowledge of God.

You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water. I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory.

Psalm 63:1-2

As for me, I will be vindicated and will see your face; when I awake, I will be satisfied with seeing your likeness.

Psalm 17:15

Seeking God must be earnest.

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

Jeremiah 29:13

But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul.

Deuteronomy 4:29

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

Hebrews 11:6

Seeking God requires faith.

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

Hebrews 11:6

We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.

Hebrews 12:2 (NLT)
