In James 5:17-18 we see an incredible truth:
When regular people pray in their praying, incredible things happen!
Elijah was a human like us, subject to the same passions – to fear and discouragement and weariness. Yet he prayed earnestly (literally ‘he prayed in his praying’) and the weather changed.
You and I may never throw a football like Mahomes.
We may never shoot a 3 like Curry.
We may never hit a note like Adele.
But every one of us can pray like Elijah.
We are on the same praying field.
Bob Hunter learned the truth as a new believer when he was challenged to pray “God help Africa” for 45 days.
We may not all end up in the dining halls of presidents when we pray. But we can all get something far greater. We can find ourselves in the company of the King of Kings.
This is possible because the power of prayer is not in us. Because the basis of our righteousness is not in us.
It’s in the finished work of Jesus Christ who died and rose again to bring us to God.
